I actually find the Movie Night segment pretty relatable as someone who has been in a similar position to the wife.
My girlfriend loves watching films and other visual media. She does think that I am intelligent, but I am admittedly somewhat terrible at watching nonlinear films, and she is keenly aware of this. As a result, we generally do not watch very complicated media together, and she has explicitly said in the past that there are certain films and shows (such as Twin Peaks) that she would prefer not to watch with me since she believes that I won’t gain much from them. When we do watch something together, she tends to choose lighter media like New Girl, which is fine since we both enjoy the show. While I do sometimes feel infantilized by her because of this, I understand that her motivations aren’t malicious. Additionally, I’m aware that there are several things that I find easy or straightforward that she finds borderline impossible. For example, having studied Computer Science in college, I am relatively comfortable with writing code and solving mathematical problems while she admittedly couldn’t write an algorithm or compute derivatives to save her life. At the end of the day, individuals have unique strengths and weaknesses, and interpreting complex films simply is one of my weaknesses. There isn’t inherently anything wrong with this; it is what it is.
